Flightradar24 Web Bookmarks
For a long time, users of the Flightradar24 platform had been asking for a better version of the bookmarks feature. This feature allows them to save their favorite aircraft, flights, airports, and locations in one place. After introducing the new widgets implementation (see the previous project), we decided that Bookmarks would also be a widget.
The main objective of this project was to add value to subscribed users. We wanted to increase engagement with the platform while at the same time redesigning a feature that was old and virtually unusable. It was quite a big and complex project because it would affect many of the main parts of the product.
The main UI addition was a star icon representing the "bookmark" action. This appears in the flight and airport panels on the top right corner. Clicking the star in the flight panel triggers a layer that allows the user to add either the flight (though the flight #) or the aircraft (through its registration).
The widget is where the bookmarks are located. It consists of four tabs that group each type of bookmark. Designing the widget was a big challenge because we had to fit enough information in a limited space while keeping it visually balanced and not overwhelming. All bookmarks have a hover state that shows a "delete" option to remove the bookmark. Also, clicking the bookmarks takes the user to the flight on the map (if it is LIVE) or to the flight/aircraft history page (if the flight is not LIVE).
We designed empty states that educate the user on adding a bookmark. We also allow the user to customise sorting the bookmark list in each tab. In "custom" sorting, they are even able to drag and drop the bookmark to their preferred order.
This project took about six months from concept to launch. The Product Team worked alongside the Subscriptions and CRM, Frontend and Backend teams in developing this project. It will be a cross-platform project, meaning that users will be able to have saved bookmarks across devices with the same account.
So far, the Bookmarks feature has gotten a positive reception from our users. Try it now on the site! *(Basic account needed to activate the widget)
